Biography: Senior Lecturer of Music, Tobie Wilkinson (he/him) has been a member of the UW-Whitewater music faculty since 2002. Mr. Wilkinson holds a Bachelors degree in Music Education and a Bachelors degree in Music Performance from Central Michigan University, and a Master of Music degree in percussion performance from Rice University. Since his appointment, the percussion studio has become a thriving and vibrant place to train young percussionists using the "total percussion" model.
Active as a free-lance performer, Mr. Wilkinson is currently Principal Timpanist with the Racine Symphony Orchestra. He has performed with the Bel Canto Chorus Orchestra, Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra, Wisconsin Philharmonic, Kenosha Symphony, Madison Symphony, and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra Prior to his appointment at UW-Whitewater, he was Principal Percussionist with the Greater Lansing Symphony, and Principal Timpanist with the West Shore Symphony, and Orchestra X in Houston, TX. Mr. Wilkinson was also a member of the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas and Charles Dutoit. In addition, has performed with touring Broadway productions, and pop artists for special events.
Equally active as a chamber musician, Mr. Wilkinson performs on faculty recitals and is co-founder of the UW-Whitewater new music ensemble, SONICT. Mr. Wilkinson along with faculty colleagues gave a full performance of Stravinsky’s The Soldiers Tale in conjunction with the UWW Theater Department and has also performed the Bartok Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion. The UW-Whitewater Percussion Ensemble also performs on many SONICT concerts under his direction.
An avid supporter of the percussion ensemble medium, Mr. Wilkinson was a member of the Robert Hohner Percussion Ensemble, which has eight recordings to its credit. Under Mr. Wilkinson’s direction, the UWW Percussion Ensemble has twice performed at the WMEA State Music Conference in Madison, and is a crucial element of the percussion program at UW-Whitewater.
In his role as Associate Marching Band Director, Mr. Wilkinson works closely with the percussion section as instructor and arranger. He also adjudicates marching bands in Wisconsin and nationally, and has worked with numerous high school percussion sections across the Midwest. Mr. Wilkinson has also served as an adjudicator for solo/ensemble festivals in Wisconsin.
Dedicated to education for younger percussionists, Mr. Wilkinson is also the director of the UW-Whitewater Percussion Camp.
